Smilla

From her vantage point in the rocky foothills overlooking the 'Valley of Towers' Smilla surveyed the wide plain below, it was early morning on the third day of battle.

Despite the ever encroaching darkness a shaft of bright sunlight split the sky and briefly bathed Smilla and her captains with a ray of warmth. Her heart grieved at the losses her Rangers were suffering but, for each one lost, a score of the enemy fell around them. When she could bare it no longer she quietly gave the order to retreat and as the great Rangers horn reverberated loudly around the valley her battalions instantly fell back towards the rocky outcrop. Sensing victory the enemy bayed their triumph and rushed in for the kill.

Biding her time Smilla reluctantly allowed the carnage to continue a little longer and then, at her unspoken command, like wraiths in the morning mist, a cadre of her best bowmen which she had held hidden in reserve suddenly filled the skyline raining arrows over the Rangers and into the enemy. Finally sensing his mistake the dark Lord bellowed up to her in his rage, "come Smilla, come out from behind your bowmen, meet me here and let us end it you and I".

Deaf to the protests of her Captains Smilla threw down her great bow and, striding sure-footedly down the slope, she defiantly began to unbutton her long tunic....
