Description

Forget Disney, Victor Hugo's original novel is a dark, sad tale of love, lust and betrayal originally written in large part to raise awareness of the loss of important Gothic Architecture during re-development in Paris. Published in 1831 the novels main protagonist, Quasimodo, the cathedral bell-ringer, falls deeply in love with gypsy street dancer Esmerelda after she shows him a moments kindness when he is being punished for attempting to kidnap her on the orders of his adoptive father, Archdeacon Frollo.

Watching from the top of the north tower Quasimodo is distraught when Esmerelda is finally hung for a murder she did not commit and in his anger throws the real culprit, Frollo, to his death before bellowing "There is everything I ever loved" after which he is never seen again until years later a gravedigger finds Esmerelda's decayed remains with the skeleton of a hunchback entwined around her.

In 2010 a British archivist discovered that a foreman of a government sculpting studio in Paris in the 1820's who worked on restoration of the Cathedral was, indeed, a hunchback.
